The need for magnification and good illumination is well recognized in all areas of Cardiovascular surgery.

Traditionally these needs have been met by Surgical Loupes with through the lens optics on a frame and a Fibre Optic headlight on a headband. These traditional methods work but induce poor posture in the operator which can lead to fatigue, neck and back pain and in some instances injury which prevents the surgeon from operating. Neck and back pain can be a constant problem.

The objective is to achieve the desired level of magnification and illumination in a way which permits the operator to work in an ergonomically comfortable and correct position.

Extensive research on these requirements has led to the development and acceptance of front lens mounted (flip up ) loupes which also permit full adjustability in the angle of declination and vertical positioning. Through the lens loupes provide neither of these facilities, some flip up loupes provide declination adjustment only but not vertical adjustment. Only Surgitel front lens mounted, flip up loupes provide all these features and consequently are recognized as superior for Cardiovascular and other surgical specialties.

Other general parameters to consider are light weight, comfort, optical edge to edge clarity, diameter of field, depth of focus and protection.

Specific individual requirements to consider are working distance, magnification and any specific optical prescription requirements.

Illumination via a headband mounted fibre optic light system attached to a light source are routinely used. These systems can be heavy, expensive and restrict movement.

The system of choice now is to use a fully adjustable LED light system powered by a rechargeable belt mounted battery pack. A bright white wide field light (Odyssey from Surgitel) provides all these facilities for a fraction of the cost of a conventional fibre optic system.
